Hunde sind der Hauptwirt und das Hauptreservoir von Leishmania infantum, einem Parasiten, der bei symptomatischen Hunden (canine Leishmaniose) unbehandelt zum Tod führt. Dieser Parasit wird in tropischen und subtropischen Ländern durch den Stich einer Sandfliege (ein kleines Insekt, das mit Mücken und Fliegen verwandt ist) übertragen. Eine direkte Übertragung zwischen Hunden sowie von trächtigen Hündinnen auf ihre Welpen ist jedoch möglich. Die Immunreaktion eines Hundes kann die Infektion über Monate bis Jahre eindämmen und so eine aktive Erkrankung verhindern. Es kann bis zu sieben Jahre nach der Infektion dauern, bis sich Krankheitssymptome entwickeln. Die canine Leishmaniose breitet sich auf die Nordhalbkugel aus, wo sie bislang kaum bekannt war. Dies ist auf den Klimawandel und die Einfuhr von Hunden zurückzuführen. We are so lucky through the kindness of supporters to be offered food and cleaning materials. We have over the last 10 years tried everything, (all our products come from Mercadona (in Spain)), the regular foods listed below offer the dogs a good nutritionally balanced diet and rarely give any of them an upset tummy and they love it.
