ROSIE & REGGIE, LENA & FOXY Recovering from a life of horror by Barkinside "Now their journey to a new life begins" Towards the end of November we were told about several dogs who were in a desperate situation and needed our help urgently. Barkinside responded immediately. After a long and difficult struggle we had four new babies taking sanctuary with us. This is their story, and a gentle appeal for help with our escalating costs. The 12th of December 2024 marks a milestone in the amazing story of the recovery of the four new dogs that came to join Barkinside two weeks ago. It was an especially big day for the amazing Little Foxy and our beautiful old girl Lena who were both rescued together. Today they they were treated to a professional grooming session courtesy of our very kind friends at Parìso del Perro . Barkinside rescues dogs from the local area and throughout Spain. I also assist other rescues that need my help if requested and am able (please visit the " our friends " page for more info). The sanctuary will take on any dog, no matter age, health, or condition. They will be cared for and rehabilitated, found homes or can stay here in our care for the remainder of their lives. We help dogs in the kill stations of Spain to find freedom and safety. We have local fosters who assist me in giving the rescues homes and stability. We save dogs where we can who are deemed beyond help, to old, to sick, to injured, to mentally scarred/scared (visit the " our rescues " page for their stories, and our current appeals). We are not a boarding kennels. We are also not a protectora (official Spanish animal welfare organisation) so we cannot legally pick up local stray dogs. For this service you should phone one of the local dog rescue charities Alma (click here ) or Hondon Valley Animal Rescue (click here ). This website promotes those dogs in our care and gives regular updates on their progress and welfare. Many of you have asked me what to buy if you want to make a physical donation rather than cash. We are so lucky through the kindness of supporters to be offered food and cleaning materials. We have over the last 10 years tried everything, (all our products come from Mercadona (in Spain)), the regular foods listed below offer the dogs a good nutritionally balanced diet and rarely give any of them an upset tummy and they love it. We don't like to mix (with other brands or products, as the dogs don't like it and we get dicky dogs). The cleaning materials (towards the bottom of this section), do a great job, don't irritate the skin and smell lovely. Unsere Freunde ABOUT MASCOTAS de ZERO (Albatera) - Alicante "We are a company dedicated to the collection, shelter and custody of abandoned animals. We work with various town councils in the area of Murcia and Alicante, to whom we provide our service. We were formerly known as Agrupación Cereco, but we have recently changed our name to MASCOTAS DE ZERO, since over the years we have evolved and adapted to our values and social demand. Our most significant change arose in August 2019, when we relocated all our facilities to Albatera, becoming a single center. Our way of working is with ZERO SACRIFICE, which is why we have decided to include it in our new name. We believe in animal welfare and that is why our objectives are to improve to be able to meet the needs of animals. Our center has a reception area, where we care for pets once they arrive at our center, as well as an operating room where minor surgery and day-to-day tasks are treated. We publish all the animals we pick up, almost in real time, making it easier for owners to check that their pets are at our center and come pick them up. If after 21 days no one has claimed them, we will look for new families for them by putting them up for adoption. AVAILABILITY From 12:00 to 14:00 and from 15:00 to 17:00 from Monday to Saturday. REPORTING ANIMAL ABUSE IN SPAIN Firstly, some advice from protectapet about the cultural differences between what may be seen as unacceptable animal abuse to some people from different parts of Europe, and what is viewed as an acceptable (or legal) way to treat an animal in Spain. "What we do have to remember is that pets in Spain are not as pampered as perhaps we are used to. Dogs, are mostly used as working dogs here in Spain. So before you denounce your neighbour for keeping his dog chained up in his yard… remember that as long as it has food, fresh water and shelter from extreme weather of any type … then the Police may not agree that depriving it of a blanket is tantamount to animal abuse." Thanks to a couple of tools and websites, one from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, and another from the ´Animal Party´/ Partido Animalista PACMA, anyone who is concerned about an animals welfare in Spain does not need to be concerned, or intimidated by the possibility of understanding local law or the processes required to make a report about animal abuse. Both tools open the process to anyone facing problems with language. OPTION 1: AlertCops AlertCops is a free mobile application, created by the General Sub-Directorate of Information Systems and Communications for Security (SGSICS). It has a new functionality, called “animal abuse”, which will allow any user to inform Policía Nacional and Guardia Civil of animal abuse discreetly and immediately. In real time, users can use the "animal abuse" icon to immediately report abuse when they witness it. Users can choose whether they want to communicate the alert by call or by chat. It also gives the option to attach photos or videos about the event. The alerts will be sent to the closest police centre where the corresponding action protocol will be activated. OPTION 2: PACMA / Yo Denuncio Current advice from The Citizens Advice Bureau of Spain : The ´Animal Party´/ Partido Animalista (PACMA) has developed a website called ¨Yo Denuncio / I denounce¨ with information on how and where to denounce animal abuse with the relevant authorities, with a set of tools to make the process accessible to all.
