Barkinside responded immediately. After a long and difficult struggle we had four new babies taking sanctuary with us. This is their story, and a gentle appeal for help with our escalating costs. The 12th of December 2024 marks a milestone in the amazing story of the recovery of the four new dogs that came to join Barkinside two weeks ago. It was an especially big day for the amazing Little Foxy and our beautiful old girl Lena who were both rescued together. REPORTING ANIMAL ABUSE IN SPAIN Firstly, some advice from protectapet about the cultural differences between what may be seen as unacceptable animal abuse to some people from different parts of Europe, and what is viewed as an acceptable (or legal) way to treat an animal in Spain. "What we do have to remember is that pets in Spain are not as pampered as perhaps we are used to. Dogs, are mostly used as working dogs here in Spain. So before you denounce your neighbour for keeping his dog chained up in his yard… remember that as long as it has food, fresh water and shelter from extreme weather of any type … then the Police may not agree that depriving it of a blanket is tantamount to animal abuse." Thanks to a couple of tools and websites, one from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, and another from the ´Animal Party´/ Partido Animalista PACMA, anyone who is concerned about an animals welfare in Spain does not need to be concerned, or intimidated by the possibility of understanding local law or the processes required to make a report about animal abuse. Both tools open the process to anyone facing problems with language. OPTION 1: AlertCops AlertCops is a free mobile application, created by the General Sub-Directorate of Information Systems and Communications for Security (SGSICS). It has a new functionality, called “animal abuse”, which will allow any user to inform Policía Nacional and Guardia Civil of animal abuse discreetly and immediately. In real time, users can use the "animal abuse" icon to immediately report abuse when they witness it. Users can choose whether they want to communicate the alert by call or by chat. It also gives the option to attach photos or videos about the event. The alerts will be sent to the closest police centre where the corresponding action protocol will be activated. OPTION 2: PACMA / Yo Denuncio Current advice from The Citizens Advice Bureau of Spain : The ´Animal Party´/ Partido Animalista (PACMA) has developed a website called ¨Yo Denuncio / I denounce¨ with information on how and where to denounce animal abuse with the relevant authorities, with a set of tools to make the process accessible to all. Uw hond kan dan een lang en gelukkig leven leiden. Honden zijn de belangrijkste gastheer en het belangrijkste reservoir van Leishmania infantum, een parasiet die de dood veroorzaakt bij honden met symptomen (hondenleishmaniasis) wanneer deze niet behandeld wordt. Deze parasiet wordt overgedragen via de beet van een zandvlieg (een klein insect dat verwant is aan muggen en vliegen) in tropische en subtropische landen, maar directe overdracht tussen honden en van drachtige honden op hun pups komt ook voor. De immuunreactie van een hond kan de infectie maanden tot jaren onder controle houden en zo een actieve ziekte voorkomen; het kan tot 7 jaar duren vanaf het moment van infectie voordat er tekenen van ziekte ontstaan. Veelvoorkomende symptomen bij honden zijn: huidproblemen (vooral rond de kop en drukpunten), vergrote lymfeklieren, vergrote milt, oogproblemen, gewichtsverlies, lethargie, verminderde eetlust, neusbloedingen, en braken en diarree. Er worden veel voorkomende afwijkingen in bloedtesten gezien bij een Leishmania-infectie, hoewel geen van deze specifiek is voor de infectie. Canine leishmaniasis breidt zich uit naar het noordelijk halfrond, waar het nauwelijks bekend was. Dit komt door klimaatverandering en de import van honden. Er zijn de afgelopen tien jaar verschillende vaccins ontwikkeld, maar hun werkzaamheid is beperkt en niet gegarandeerd 100% effectief. Dit geldt ook voor de vaccinatie die in Spanje beschikbaar is. De cijfers liggen lager in Centraal-Spanje (1-5%) en in het noorden, terwijl in de Pyreneeën en de noordoostelijke gebieden een prevalentie van 19,5% werd gevonden, voornamelijk onder de jachthondenpopulatie. Lage prevalentiecijfers (0-2,5%) werden aangetroffen op de Canarische Eilanden, hoewel geïmporteerde gevallen niet werden uitgesloten. Deze ziekte is grotendeels onbekend bij dierenartsen buiten de endemische gebieden. Viscerale leishmaniasis: (veroorzaakt door Leishmania infantum), veroorzaakt een systemische ziekte, die zich uit in koorts, malaise, gewichtsverlies en bloedarmoede, zwelling van de milt, lever en lymfeklieren; De meeste wereldwijd gerapporteerde gevallen komen voor in Bangladesh, Brazilië, India, Nepal en Soedan. Risico voor mensen Een opmerkelijk aantal gevallen van leishmaniasis in de Europese Unie (EU) komt van buiten Europa, vaak als gevolg van reizen naar tropische landen waar leishmaniasis vaker voorkomt. Vaccinatie en behandeling: Momenteel is er geen vaccinatie beschikbaar voor deze parasiet. Er bestaan echter verschillende behandelingen, hoewel de parasiet in de loop der tijd resistentie heeft ontwikkeld tegen sommige van deze medicijnen. The sanctuary will take on any dog, no matter age, health, or condition. They will be cared for and rehabilitated, found homes or can stay here in our care for the remainder of their lives. Wij helpen honden in de dodingstations van Spanje om vrijheid en veiligheid te vinden. We hebben lokale pleegouders die me helpen bij het geven van huizen en stabiliteit aan de reddingsacties. We redden honden waar we kunnen die niet meer te helpen zijn, te oud, te ziek, te gewond, tot mentaal getekend/bang te zijn (bezoek de " onze reddingen " pagina voor hun verhalen en onze huidige oproepen). Wij zijn geen pensionkennel. We zijn ook geenprotectora (officiële Spaanse dierenwelzijnsorganisatie) dus we kunnen lokale zwerfhonden niet legaal oppikken. On Saturday's we are now busy preparing for the boot fairs, and making some time for ourselves on Mondays gives us breathing space and time to unload the van, vets etc. Our working day averages 14 to 16 hours, with 36 dogs, horses, cats etc, so please be patient with us. They are on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month at Tipsy Terrace in Hondon de las Frailes , and on the 2nd and last Sunday of each month at El Canton. This was the message that greeted us all online today, from his grief stricken friend, mum and rescuer at Barkinside. "I don't know where to start. How do I tell you all. How do I even begin.. This morning, our hero, our lion, our magnificent Noble left us. He went into acute kidney failure and there was nothing I could do this time to save him. The only reason I know I am alive is because I am still breathing. I decided to let him go with Grace, with so so much love, with Peace. I held him, told him how much I loved him, how you all loved him, how we would be together again. That he can run with Oscar, Louis , Nina, Munchkin, Beti, Lola, Spartan and all the most beautiful souls, no longer in this realm. Yes, I am sobbing , my heart is broken. But I had the absolute joy of having this beautiful boy in my life, even for far to shorter time. I held him. And he knew only love. Dog collars impregnated with deltamethrin are used to control the infection of reservoir dogs. Leishmaniosis cannot be transmitted from dog to humans Barkinside advises that all dogs in and from Spain should have a blood test annually. LEISHMANIASIS Seroprevalence : "...the frequency of individuals in a population who have a particular element and especially antibodies to an infectious agent in their blood serum..." If caught early and not affecting the main organs, Leishmaniosis can be treated and controlled very effectively and the dog can lead a long and happy life. Dogs are the main host and main reservoir of Leishmania infantum, a parasite that causes death in symptomatic dogs (canine leishmaniasis), when not treated. This parasite is transmitted through the bite of a sandfly (a small insect related to mosquitoes and flies) in tropical and subtropical countries, but direct transmission between dogs, and from pregnant dogs to their puppies, exists. A dog’s immune response can contain the infection, preventing active disease, for months-to-years; it can take up to 7 years from the point of infection before signs of disease develop. Canine Symptoms commonly include: skin problems (especially around the head and pressure points), enlarged lymph nodes enlarged spleen, eye problems, weight loss, lethargy, reduced appetite, nose bleeds, and vomiting and diarrhoea. There are many common blood test abnormalities seen in Leishmania infection – although none of these are specific for the infection. Canine leishmaniasis is expanding to the Northern Hemisphere, where it was barely known.This is due to climate change and the importation of dogs. Several vaccines have been developed in the last decade, but their efficacy is limited and not guaranteed to be 100% effective, this includes the innoculation available in Spain. Veterinary researchers are still waiting for the ideal drug that can eliminate the parasite from target organs and limit transmission. How it spreads: When female sandflies bite and feed on blood of an infected host, they can acquire the Leishmania parasites. These parasites can then be transmitted to another host by the same sandfly species during a subsequent blood meal. Additionally, Leishmania can be passed from a mother to her child, from a female dog to her puppy, or through the sharing of syringes. In southern European countries, Canine leishmaniasis, (now referred to as "CanL"), seroprevalence reaches high levels. Prevelance in Spain: CanL is widespread in Spain. It can be considered endemic in almost the entire territory. In the southeast section of the country, the seroprevalence was calculated at 23.7%. Hot spots have been found in the Axarquia region (Malaga). Figures are lower in central Spain (1–5%) and in the North, whereas in the Pyrenees and northeastern areas, 19.5% prevalence was found, mainly among the hunting dog population. Low prevalence numbers (0–2.5%) were found in the Canary Islands, although imported cases were not ruled out. This disease is mostly unknown by veterinarians outside the endemic areas. In Humans the parasite manifests in various forms, causing visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis in populations in the Mediterranean Basin, North Africa, South America, and West Asia. Cutaneous leishmaniasis: (caused by Leishmania tropica), causes skin sores which are often self-healing within a few months, but which may leave ugly scars; it occurs worldwide, including the Mediterranean coast. Visceral leishmaniasis: (caused by Leishmania infantum), causes systemic disease, presenting with fever, malaise, weight loss and anaemia, swelling of the spleen, liver and lymph nodes; most of the cases reported worldwide occur in Bangladesh, Brazil, India, Nepal and Sudan. Risk for people A noteworthy number of leishmaniasis cases in the European Union (EU) come from outside Europe, often due to travel to tropical countries where leishmaniasis is more prevalent. Vaccination and treatment: Currently, there is no available vaccination for this parasite. However, various treatments exist, although over time, the parasite has developed resistance to some of these medications. Protective measures include: using methods like mosquito nets treated with insect repellent, applying insect repellent directly to your skin, managing the presence of insects around your home.
