ROSIE & REGGIE, LENA & FOXY Recovering from a life of horror by Barkinside "Now their journey to a new life begins" Towards the end of November we were told about several dogs who were in a desperate situation and needed our help urgently. Barkinside responded immediately. After a long and difficult struggle we had four new babies taking sanctuary with us. This is their story, and a gentle appeal for help with our escalating costs. The 12th of December 2024 marks a milestone in the amazing story of the recovery of the four new dogs that came to join Barkinside two weeks ago. It was an especially big day for the amazing Little Foxy and our beautiful old girl Lena who were both rescued together. Today they they were treated to a professional grooming session courtesy of our very kind friends at Parìso del Perro . Barkinside Sanctuary promotes those dogs in our care and gives regular updates on their progress and welfare. We also post photos and information on each dog and the daily life of the Rescue Centre and Sanctuary and the work we do here. We have been rescuing dogs here for over 10 years. We have between 40 and 60 dogs or more at any one time, plus horses, donkeys, cats etc.. We help other rescues and work with traumatised, damaged,disabled and older dogs. Our much loved van has recently died on us and without transport we are dead in the water and would have to close. We have rescued over 700 dogs and homed 648. We need help urgently and are appealing for funding to help us replace her and to keep going and saving more lives. The van is in daily use for vets, boot fairs, collections, donations, the list is endless. We try to help any dogs we can, no matter of age, health, condition, or size. Some of them have been here for a short time and sadly some longer. Some will stay with us at the sanctuary for good. Some of them are small and some large. But they all just want to be loved. They all have big hearts and are waiting to share them with families, or with us here. We know she had leishmaniosis, but we need, through, bloodwork to see how she is doing. Our vet was very pleased, so we just wait for the results. We then decided to street test her with other dogs and people. She's awesome 8th May 2025 Yesterday our beautiful Pucca was taken on a walk by the lovely Adrian and Sue Swan, who brought her to us from Asoka. She's a wonderful girl. Margo UNAVAILABLE Meet beautiful little Margo.. Only two years old and mainly blind. In with the littlies and safe. Poor baby Alegria UNAVAILABLE Alegria, one of the most stunning dogs I have ever seen, and one of the most beautiful natures. Now nearly 10 years old and no one has come to see her. She was rescued a few years ago after being found on the streets of Seville. She had definitely been used for breeding and possibly baiting and she was very aggressive. We gave ourselves a time limit to try and help her and after about 4 months this beautiful sweet girl emerged. A serious cuddle monster. She has been with us about 4 years sadly and we are very happy for her to remain in what she thinks of as her home, she like all the others now lives in the sanctuary. He is about 12 years of age and found himself shut away, with no contact or outside interaction. We were asked to rescue him and now , this so called aggressive dog, is free, lives where he chooses, sleeps in the house. Truly gentle old man, loves men xxx Flecha UNAVAILABLE The oh so wonderful Flecha. Only a baby of 18 months old, born with Cerebral Hypoplasia due to her mother having Parvo. The part of the brain that coordinated movement has not developed so this gorgeous little girl is classed as disabled and will sadly always be so. She is a bloody lovely girl and we have build a whole are for her to be safe in. She is very loving, but patience is definitely needed 24 hours a day. But we think their model fits Barkinside and our supporters well. This method of sponsorship opens up supporting Barkinside to a wider public, and turns what can be a bit of a boring (especially for younger people) donation system into a two way and fun interaction. LEISHMANIASIS NL: Leishmaniasis bij honden – Wat u moet weten Wat is het? Leishmaniasis is een ernstige ziekte die wordt veroorzaakt door de Leishmania-parasiet en die zich verspreidt via de beet van een zandvlieg. De ziekte komt veel voor in warme landen zoals Spanje en is actief van mei tot oktober. Zandvlieg – de stille verspreider - Slechts 2–4 mm lang, geelbruin - Actief in de schemering en 's nachts - Alleen vrouwtjes bijten voor bloed - Leeft op vochtige, donkere, beschutte plaatsen Waarom is het gevaarlijk? - Eén beet kan uw hond besmetten - Symptomen: gewichtsverlies, huidzweren, vermoeidheid, koorts, lange nagels Beschermingstips - Gebruik Scalibor-halsbanden of anti-insectenpipetten - Laat uw hond 's nachts binnen slapen - Vermijd stress en geef geen cortisonen als u geïnfecteerd bent - Test uw hond als u twijfelt - Overweeg vaccinatie Zonder bescherming: tot 18% infectierisico Vroege detectie is de sleutel Leishmaniasis kan meestal niet volledig genezen worden, maar wel onder controle worden gehouden. Er worden veel voorkomende afwijkingen in bloedtesten gezien bij een Leishmania-infectie, hoewel geen van deze specifiek is voor de infectie. Canine leishmaniasis breidt zich uit naar het noordelijk halfrond, waar het nauwelijks bekend was. Dit komt door klimaatverandering en de import van honden. De ziekte kan in bijna het hele land als endemisch worden beschouwd. In het zuidoosten van het land werd de seroprevalentie vastgesteld op 23,7%. Hotspots zijn gevonden in de regio Axarquía (Málaga). De cijfers liggen lager in Centraal-Spanje (1-5%) en in het noorden, terwijl in de Pyreneeën en de noordoostelijke gebieden een prevalentie van 19,5% werd gevonden, voornamelijk onder de jachthondenpopulatie. Lage prevalentiecijfers (0-2,5%) werden aangetroffen op de Canarische Eilanden, hoewel geïmporteerde gevallen niet werden uitgesloten. Deze ziekte is grotendeels onbekend bij dierenartsen buiten de endemische gebieden. Viscerale leishmaniasis: (veroorzaakt door Leishmania infantum), veroorzaakt een systemische ziekte, die zich uit in koorts, malaise, gewichtsverlies en bloedarmoede, zwelling van de milt, lever en lymfeklieren; De meeste wereldwijd gerapporteerde gevallen komen voor in Bangladesh, Brazilië, India, Nepal en Soedan. Risico voor mensen Een opmerkelijk aantal gevallen van leishmaniasis in de Europese Unie (EU) komt van buiten Europa, vaak als gevolg van reizen naar tropische landen waar leishmaniasis vaker voorkomt. Vaccinatie en behandeling: Momenteel is er geen vaccinatie beschikbaar voor deze parasiet. This was the message that greeted us all online today, from his grief stricken friend, mum and rescuer at Barkinside. "I don't know where to start. How do I tell you all. How do I even begin.. This morning, our hero, our lion, our magnificent Noble left us. He went into acute kidney failure and there was nothing I could do this time to save him. The only reason I know I am alive is because I am still breathing. I decided to let him go with Grace, with so so much love, with Peace. I held him, told him how much I loved him, how you all loved him, how we would be together again. That he can run with Oscar, Louis , Nina, Munchkin, Beti, Lola, Spartan and all the most beautiful souls, no longer in this realm. Yes, I am sobbing , my heart is broken. But I had the absolute joy of having this beautiful boy in my life, even for far to shorter time. I held him. And he knew only love.
