LEISHMANIASIS ES: Leishmaniasis en perros: lo que debes saber ¿Qué es? La leishmaniasis es una enfermedad grave causada por el parásito Leishmania, que se transmite por la picadura del flebótomo. Común en países cálidos como España, activa de mayo a octubre. Flebótomos: el propagador silencioso - Sólo 2–4 mm de largo, de color marrón amarillento. - Activo al anochecer y por la noche. - Sólo las hembras muerden para obtener sangre. - Vive en lugares húmedos, oscuros y protegidos. ¿Por qué es peligroso? - Una mordedura puede infectar a tu perro. - Síntomas: pérdida de peso, llagas en la piel, fatiga, fiebre, uñas largas. LEISHMANIASIS Si se detecta a tiempo y no afecta a los órganos principales, la leishmaniosis se puede tratar y controlar de forma muy eficaz y el perro puede llevar una vida larga y feliz. Los perros son el principal huésped y reservorio de Leishmania infantum, un parásito que causa la muerte en perros sintomáticos (leishmaniasis canina) si no se trata. Este parásito se transmite por la picadura de un flebótomo (un pequeño insecto emparentado con los mosquitos y las moscas) en países tropicales y subtropicales, pero existe transmisión directa entre perros, y de perras gestantes a sus cachorros. La respuesta inmunitaria de un perro puede contener la infección, previniendo la enfermedad activa, durante meses o años; pueden pasar hasta 7 años desde el momento de la infección hasta que se presenten los signos de la enfermedad. Los síntomas caninos suelen incluir: problemas en la piel (especialmente alrededor de la cabeza y en los puntos de presión), inflamación de los ganglios linfáticos, inflamación del bazo, problemas oculares, pérdida de peso, letargo, disminución del apetito, hemorragia nasal, vómitos y diarrea. Se observan muchas anomalías comunes en los análisis de sangre en la infección por Leishmania, aunque ninguna es específica de la infección. La leishmaniasis canina se está expandiendo al hemisferio norte, donde apenas se conocía. Esto se debe al cambio climático y a la importación de perros. En la última década se han desarrollado varias vacunas, pero su eficacia es limitada y no se garantiza su 100%, incluida la inoculación disponible en España. Los investigadores veterinarios aún esperan encontrar el fármaco ideal que pueda eliminar el parásito de los órganos diana y limitar la transmisión. Cómo se propaga: Cuando las hembras de flebótomos pican y se alimentan de la sangre de un huésped infectado, pueden contraer los parásitos de Leishmania. En los países del sur de Europa, la seroprevalencia de la leishmaniasis canina (ahora conocida como "CanL") alcanza niveles elevados. Prevalencia en España: La CanL está muy extendida en España. Se puede considerar endémica en casi todo el territorio. En el sureste del país, la seroprevalencia se calculó en un 23,7 %. Se han detectado focos de infección en la Axarquía (Málaga). Las cifras son inferiores en el centro de España (1-5 %) y en el norte, mientras que en los Pirineos y el noreste se encontró una prevalencia del 19,5 %, principalmente entre la población de perros de caza. En las Islas Canarias se encontraron cifras de prevalencia bajas (0-2,5 %), aunque no se descartaron casos importados. Esta enfermedad es mayoritariamente desconocida para los veterinarios fuera de las zonas endémicas. En humanos, el parásito se manifiesta de diversas formas, causando leishmaniasis visceral y cutánea en poblaciones de la cuenca mediterránea, norte de África, Sudamérica y Asia occidental. Leishmaniasis cutánea (causada por Leishmania tropica) causa llagas en la piel que suelen curarse espontáneamente en pocos meses, pero que pueden dejar cicatrices desagradables. Se presenta en todo el mundo, incluida la costa mediterránea. Leishmaniasis visceral (causada por Leishmania infantum) causa enfermedad sistémica, que se presenta con fiebre, malestar general, pérdida de peso y anemia, inflamación del bazo, el hígado y los ganglios linfáticos. Nuestros amigos ABOUT MASCOTAS de ZERO (Albatera) - Alicante "We are a company dedicated to the collection, shelter and custody of abandoned animals. We work with various town councils in the area of Murcia and Alicante, to whom we provide our service. We were formerly known as Agrupación Cereco, but we have recently changed our name to MASCOTAS DE ZERO, since over the years we have evolved and adapted to our values and social demand. Our most significant change arose in August 2019, when we relocated all our facilities to Albatera, becoming a single center. Our way of working is with ZERO SACRIFICE, which is why we have decided to include it in our new name. We believe in animal welfare and that is why our objectives are to improve to be able to meet the needs of animals. Our center has a reception area, where we care for pets once they arrive at our center, as well as an operating room where minor surgery and day-to-day tasks are treated. We publish all the animals we pick up, almost in real time, making it easier for owners to check that their pets are at our center and come pick them up. REPORTING ANIMAL ABUSE IN SPAIN Firstly, some advice from protectapet about the cultural differences between what may be seen as unacceptable animal abuse to some people from different parts of Europe, and what is viewed as an acceptable (or legal) way to treat an animal in Spain. "What we do have to remember is that pets in Spain are not as pampered as perhaps we are used to. Dogs, are mostly used as working dogs here in Spain. So before you denounce your neighbour for keeping his dog chained up in his yard… remember that as long as it has food, fresh water and shelter from extreme weather of any type … then the Police may not agree that depriving it of a blanket is tantamount to animal abuse." Thanks to a couple of tools and websites, one from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, and another from the ´Animal Party´/ Partido Animalista PACMA, anyone who is concerned about an animals welfare in Spain does not need to be concerned, or intimidated by the possibility of understanding local law or the processes required to make a report about animal abuse. Both tools open the process to anyone facing problems with language. OPTION 1: AlertCops AlertCops is a free mobile application, created by the General Sub-Directorate of Information Systems and Communications for Security (SGSICS). It has a new functionality, called “animal abuse”, which will allow any user to inform Policía Nacional and Guardia Civil of animal abuse discreetly and immediately.
